JAZZ ENSEMBLES

Thunderbird has one of the finest high school jazz programs in the state of Arizona, with its award winning and nationally recognized groups performing at major festivals throughout the southwest and the nation numerous times during the course of the year. There are currently two full-time, year-round big bands and two jazz combos.

The jazz ensembles are open to students studying (or desiring to study) saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, or drums. All of the groups perform in many different styles with an emphasis on improvisation. An audition or director's approval is required for entry into Jazz Ensemble I (advanced jazz) and Jazz Ensemble II (intermediate jazz). Jazz Ensemble III (beginning jazz) is open to all students and entry does not require an audition. Auditions for Jazz Ensemble I and Jazz Ensemble II are held every year during the first week in May. To request audition materials, please request materials via e-mail from the director, Mr. Matteson after March 1st.

All students who enroll for any jazz ensemble are required to enroll in Advanced Band, as Advanced Band teaches fundamental musicianship. Jazz rhythm section students (bass, piano, or guitar) usually participate in Advanced Band as members of the Drumline or pit (side-line) percussion. When registering, students enroll in "Jazz Ensemble" and are placed in the appropriate ensemble after auditions.

There is an $80 fee per student per semester for participation in the jazz ensembles. These monies go towards uniforms, festival fees, travel expenses, and guest clinicians.
