The Thunderbird jazz bands recently returned from the Fullerton College Jazz Festival, where all three groups did extremely well, earning Superior ratings. Jazz II took 1st place in their division, as did Combo I. Jazz I finished 4th in the Heavy division but gave it their all and should be proud of themselves. There are some incredibly great bands in that division. All of the students seemed to have had a great time at the festival and at the hotel, as there was some time to relax in the pool and catch some thrills at Six Flags Magic Mountain. The trip took place from March 31st through April 2nd. |

World re known jazz composer and arranger, Mike Crotty spent two full days in clinic sessions with all nine GUHSD jazz bands. Each clinic lasted one hour and allowed each band to receive valuable tips and instruction. All of the students and directors had a great time. Mike Crotty was the principle composer and arranger with the U.S. Air Force's premier jazz ensemble, The Airmen of Note for 26 years. Mr Crotty is now at ASU, where he directs jazz ensembles and teaches composition. |

Thunderbird students Ben Gray, David Andrade, and Cameren Martinez recently participated in the annual All-State Jazz Band experience. Cameren was in the All-State Clinic Band under the direction of long-time Tonight Show and Buddy Rich bass player Joel Di Bartolo, who is currently Director of Jazz Studies at NAU. The Clinic Band put on a great show at the Arizona Music educators' Conference in Mesa on January 14th and Cameren did an awesome job. Ben and David were selected to the All-State band under the direction of world famous composer and long time professor at the Eastman School of Music, Mr. Fred Sturm. The All-State Band performed in concert at Mesa Mountain View High School and played a terrific set. Congratulations to all three of our All-State Jazz students! |

Senior clarinet player Jenn Kabbas placed first among all clarinets in the Youth Symphony Concerto Competition held at ASU on January 8th. She also placed 3rd in the Woodwinds category which was good enough to put her in the scholarship round. Her 9th place finish in that round earned her a scholarship to music camp . Her performance was recorded and will be aired by KBAQ radio. Way to go Jenn! |
